Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet)

Proper kit begins at the seams, not the fanfare: six racquets sit in a 100% polyester shell, with YKK zip runs, its own shoe pocket, rucksack straps and grab handles. Ruby Red, Blast B., G./Black or Black; royal flourishes bore it, pier logic suits Brighton and Hove

Stop one

The Royal Pavilion, George IV's Indo-Saracenic seaside palace

Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet): Look, everyone keeps banging on about George IV, but can we talk about John Nash's cast-iron structural framework inside those onion domes for one second? The whole Indo-Saracenic exterior is essentially decorative cladding hung off a pioneering prefabricated ironwork skeleton completed in 1823 — the king is irrelevant, the load path is spectacular.

Stop two

Brighton Palace Pier

Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet): Brighton Palace Pier stretches 1,722 feet out to sea on wrought- and cast-iron screw piles driven directly into the seabed — that's the entire game right there, the pile-to-deck connection tolerating tidal load, lateral wave force, and approximately six million visitors a year without so much as a visible deflection. I find that genuinely moving. The amusement rides I could take or leave.

Stop three

The burnt-out skeleton of the West Pier standing offshore

Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet): The West Pier, designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1866, is a masterclass in what happens when corrosion protection maintenance is abandoned — the wrought-iron substructure simply gave the sea what the sea was always going to win eventually, and two fires in 2003 finished the superstructure off entirely. It's a structural failure, obviously, but as a stress-test case study in long-term tidal fatigue it is absolutely riveting, and I will not apologise for that.

Stop four

The fishing arches and Brighton Fishing Museum on the shingle beach

Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet): These tall brick arches under the promenade were built into the King's Road Arches retaining structure specifically to give the fishing fleet dry storage against the shingle beach — load-bearing masonry doing exactly what it should, transferring the promenade deck above down into the ground while the Brighton Fishing Museum keeps the actual human story alive inside them. Solid arch geometry, sensible material choice, I have no notes.

Yonex Team Tennis Bag (6 Racquet)

Written for this world alone.

A bag is a structure, and structures are judged on how they carry load. So: six frames, which is a real load, held in a body of 100 per cent polyester with YKK zips throughout.

Two carrying systems, handles and backpack straps, which matters more than it sounds — a six-frame bag on one shoulder puts the whole load through one side of your spine, and a load path like that is a design fault, not a preference. There is a separate shoe pocket, which is a containment measure.

And it is the Team line, meaning it is built to a practical standard for people who buy in numbers and expect the thing to survive a season. Ruby red, blast blue, grey and black, or black.

Zips are joints, and YKK zips are specified here because a zip is the component that fails and takes the whole assembly with it. Straps are load paths: check where they are stitched, because a strap is only as good as the panel it is anchored to.

The things worth inspecting on any bag are the joints and the load path.

Polyester is chosen for abrasion resistance and because it dries. It is a well-arranged one, which is rarer.

It is not a complicated object.

Brighton and Hove is a town I could talk about all day, and not for the reasons in the brochures. The Royal Pavilion looks like an Indian palace and is nothing of the kind underneath: the domes sit on a concealed cast-iron frame, and there are cast-iron columns in the kitchen made to look like palm trees. Iron doing the work, decoration doing the talking. And then the piers.

A pier is a building on legs standing in salt water, which is the most hostile structural environment there is. One of them, the Palace Pier, is still open. The other is out there as a burnt skeleton, and you can read the whole failure sequence in what is left of it. I find that genuinely moving.

Iron is doing the work and the plasterwork is taking the credit. That is most buildings, and most bags.
