Lacoste Ultra Dry Tennis Skirt: When someone tells me a town exists because of a river I ask for the receipts, and here they are. Foča sits where the Drina meets the Ćehotina, on the old trade and communication route through the Drina valley, and it grew into a substantial Ottoman market town on the strength of it. The record for 1918 counts eighteen mahalas, seventeen mosques and four market places: the Donja, Gornja, Prijeka and Careva čaršija. Four separate market places is not a village that got lucky, that is a documented trading town. And the Drina running past you here is the same water that carries the whitewater rafting for which the town is now best known.

Sutjeska National Park

Lacoste Ultra Dry Tennis Skirt: The oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina is precisely the sort of claim I check, and it holds. Established in 1962, and nothing has taken the title from it since. Inside are nine glacial lakes, the headwaters and canyons of the Sutjeska, and the country's highest ground on the Maglić massif, highest being a measured figure rather than a local boast. Foča is the gateway town and the base for walking, climbing and rafting in the park. I arrived fully prepared to dismantle a superlative and I am leaving with it intact, which happens rarely enough that you should enjoy it.

Perućica Primeval Forest and the Skakavac Waterfall

Lacoste Ultra Dry Tennis Skirt: Primeval is a word people throw around, so define the term: never logged. That is the test, and Perućica passes it, which is why it counts as one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe and is a strictly protected reserve within Sutjeska National Park. Not managed, not replanted, not tidied up. In the middle of it the Skakavac waterfall drops roughly 75 metres with a flow of some 9 to 12 litres per second, among the highest falls in the country. Begova kuća (the Beg's House), Foča

Lacoste Ultra Dry Tennis Skirt: An eighteenth-century house that now serves as a café and as the headquarters of the town's hunting association sounds like the beginning of a doubtful heritage claim, until you look at the building. Begova kuća is one of the surviving pieces of Foča's Ottoman domestic architecture, from the period when this was one of the more important market and craft centres of eastern Bosnia, which is consistent with the market places and the trade route already established. The story matches itself, and that is the best evidence there is. The built heritage of the same era includes the clock tower raised by Mehmed-paša Kukavica, and the surrounding countryside holds scattered medieval stećci, the carved standing tombstones.
