Temple of Khnum

Nike Court Mid-Rise Fleece Women's Tennis Shorts: (quietly) Nine metres down. The town rose around it, century upon century, until the temple lay beneath the street — and people walked over Khnum, the ram-headed creator who fashioned humanity on his potter's wheel, without knowing what was under their feet. It is one of the last great temples of ancient Egypt. One of the oldest surviving minarets in Egypt — brick, tapering shaft, one of the small family of early minarets preserved in Upper Egypt at Esna, Luxor and Aswan, that document the first centuries of Islamic architecture along the upper Nile, when the region prospered on trade routes linking the valley to the Red Sea and the caravan roads to Sudan. And here is the part that unsettles me pleasantly: the mosque it served was rebuilt in later eras. The building around it changed. The minaret did not. It still presides over the old quarters beside the temple pit — watching the hole where the older gods are.

It is a rare surviving caravanserai of Upper Egypt, built in the Ottoman era when Esna was a major entrepôt of the camel caravans and Nile boats trading between Egypt, Nubia and the lands of Sudan. Merchants lodged in the upper rooms. Below them, through this courtyard, passed gold, ivory, gum, grain — and enslaved people. That is the true weight of the place, and it is heavier than any ghost I could offer you. Esna's markets and riverfront made it one of the chief commercial towns south of Cairo in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and a place of political exile besides. Restored now, hosting cultural and craft activities.

Esna Barrage

Nike Court Mid-Rise Fleece Women's Tennis Shorts: (whispering, over the water) Something here was replaced and has refused to leave. Completed in 1906 to 1908, it is one of the chain of Nile control works with which British-era engineers remade Egyptian agriculture — built to hold up the river's level so that perennial irrigation could reach the sugarcane and cereal lands of the Qena and Esna reaches, complementing the first Aswan Dam of 1902 and the works at Asyut and Zifta. Its long line of masonry arches and sluice gates, engineered under men of the school of Sir William Willcocks, carried a roadway across the river and made Esna a lock station; cruise boats still pass the locks beside it. A modern barrage superseded it in the 1990s. The old one simply stayed.
