Tecnifibre Fire 300 Tennis Racquet

Three hundred grams unstrung with a 100 in² head, a 16×19 open pattern, a thick 25 mm beam for energy and a 320 mm balance, plus the Fire line's X-DAMP to take the harshness out of a stiff frame. Arrives unstrung, in white. Jaffa first: a clock tower, a street fountain, and Andromeda's rock.

Stop one

the Ottoman clock tower at the gate of the old town

Tecnifibre Fire 300: This clock tower was built in 1906 to mark the 25th year of Sultan Abdul Hamid II's reign — because nothing says 'I've still got it' like commissioning a giant clock. The Fire 300 also marks time, specifically the exact moment your opponent realizes your forehand has no mercy. That joke landed better in my head, moving on.

Stop two

the Mahmoudiya Mosque with its street fountain

Tecnifibre Fire 300: The Mahmoudiya Mosque was completed in 1812 and its street fountain was designed to provide free water to every passerby — genuinely one of the nicest things a building has ever done, and I've been in buildings. The Fire 300's graphite frame is equally generous: it gives you power, control, AND the confidence to talk trash at the net. Okay the fountain still wins, but it's close.

Fort Lauderdale advanced tennis class — Tecnifibre Fire 300 racquet on the steps of St Peter's Church overlooking Jaffa harbour
Stop three

St Peter's Church looking down over the harbour

Tecnifibre Fire 300: St Peter's Church sits on a hill so dramatically positioned above the harbour that it basically looks like it's accepting an award. It was built by Spanish Franciscans in the 17th century, and Napoleon himself slept here in 1799 — which means this church has better overnight-guest credentials than most five-star hotels. The Fire 300 also has a Napoleon complex: small by racquet standards at 295 grams, but absolutely convinced it can conquer the court.

Stop four

Andromeda's Rock, the outcrop off the port where Perseus is said to have cut her free

Tecnifibre Fire 300: According to Greek mythology, Andromeda was chained to that rock right there until Perseus swooped in on a winged horse and saved her — Jaffa was doing dramatic coastal storytelling before it was cool. The Fire 300's open 16×19 string pattern gives you the spin to, let's say, slay sea monsters, or at least a 4.5-rated club player, which honestly feels scarier. Perseus didn't have a racquet and look how long it took him.

Written for this world alone.

Three hundred grams, folks, and if you are wondering whether that is a lot, so was I, so I picked up my phone and my phone is about two hundred, which means this racquet weighs one and a half phones. That is the metric system, everybody. That is what we fought for.

Three hundred grams unstrung, ten and a half ounces. A 645 square centimetre head, which is a hundred square inches — a full-size, forgiving stringbed. Length 685 millimetres, the standard twenty-seven inches.

Now the real numbers, and they are good ones.

Balance at 320 millimetres, which is more even than the lighter Fire, because at three hundred grams the frame does not need mass thrown out to the tip to have presence. The beam is 24.5, 25 and 24.5 millimetres through the hoop — thick, stiff, energetic — and the string pattern is 16×19, the open one, which means more bite on the ball for spin.

X-DAMP is the Fire line's damping technology, and it is the joke at the heart of this frame: a thick powerful beam usually means a harsh one, and this is the version where somebody actually did something about it. That is not a flaw. That is a hobby.

It arrives unstrung, in white, which means you get to have an argument about string with a man in a shop.

Jaffa is a tough crowd. There is a clock tower at the gate of the old town, put up by the Ottomans, and a mosque with a fountain built into the street wall so people could drink on their way past — which is the single most considerate piece of urban design I have come across. St Peter's looks down over the harbour.

And out in the water sits Andromeda's Rock, where Perseus is supposed to have cut her loose from the chains, which is a rescue story so dramatic that the rock is still trading on it three thousand years later. Now that is a career.

One and a half phones. That is the whole review. Everything else is detail.
