Oruro, Bolivia
01
Beverly Heights tennis training — Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes at Faro de Conchupata in Oruro
Stop one

Faro de Conchupata

Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes: EYES FRONT. Seventh of November, 1851. On this ground President Manuel Isidoro Belzu raised the red, yellow and green tricolour for the FIRST TIME — the flag adopted by the law of 5 November 1851, the flag Bolivia still flies TODAY. Say the date back to me. Seventh of November. Eighteen fifty-one. The ceremony was held before the principal national authorities, with artillery and rifle salvos, so there was noise, there was smoke, and there were men standing in a straight line exactly where you are standing now. Two days between the law and the flag. TWO DAYS. That is what I call turnaround. NO STRAGGLERS.

02
Beverly Heights tennis training — Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes at Casa de la Cultura Simón I. Patiño in Oruro
Stop two

Casa de la Cultura Simón I. Patiño

Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes: FORM UP. Single file inside. This was the Oruro residence of Simón I. Patiño, the tin magnate who built one of the LARGEST mining fortunes in the WORLD out of Bolivian ore. Out of this ground. Under your boots. It is now a museum holding his furniture, his personal possessions, his musical instruments and his TOYS — yes, toys, and I will hear no sniggering, a man is entitled to a childhood. There is a gallery of colonial art as well. You will look at all of it. You will touch none of it. Repeat the name back to me: PATIÑO. Again. Good. Move.

03
Beverly Heights tennis training — Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes at Sanctuary of the Virgen del Socavón in Oruro
Stop three

Sanctuary of the Virgen del Socavón and the Plaza del Folklore

Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes: HATS OFF. This church is a nineteenth-century rebuilding of a sanctuary of 1771, dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, PATRON OF THE MINERS OF ORURO. Men came up out of the dark to this door. It is the destination of the Carnival of Oruro, which UNESCO proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001 — say the year back to me: TWO THOUSAND AND ONE. Attached to it is a double museum covering sacred art, folklore, archaeology and mining. Four subjects. You will give every one of them your attention. In you go. Quietly.

04
Beverly Heights tennis training — Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes at Monument to the Virgen del Socavón on Cerro Santa Bárbara in Oruro
Stop four

Monument to the Virgen del Socavón, Cerro Santa Bárbara

Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes: LOOK UP. FURTHER UP. Forty-five point four metres of statue — the TALLEST of its kind in SOUTH AMERICA — standing on Cerro Santa Bárbara at around 3,883 metres above sea level. Three thousand eight hundred and eighty-three. That is your altitude, that is why you are breathing like that, and no, you are not unwell, you are simply high up. The teleférico from the city below makes the journey in about three minutes. THREE MINUTES. You will not be walking it, and before anybody asks, yes, that is a mercy. Board in an orderly fashion. Nobody drops anything out of that cabin.

The Oruro, Bolivia track

Asics Gel-Resolution X Women's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Come here, sweetheart, sit down, let me look at you. Now these — the Asics Gel-Resolution X — these are good shoes, the kind your cousin Marisol should have been wearing before that whole ankle business at the club, but did she listen?

The DYNAWALL along the midfoot holds you steady when you lunge side to side, and the DYNALACING keeps everything snug through all that dashing about you insist on doing. Forefoot GEL cushioning under the toes, soft as a fresh marraqueta, and a clever two-piece midsole so you land stable every time.

There's PGUARD reinforcement inside the forefoot where you drag your toe — don't tell me you don't, I've seen you — and an AHARPLUS rubber outsole that will outlive us all, God willing.

They lace up properly, they come in sizes 5 through 12, and — this is the part that matters, mi amor — they come in wide widths too, because feet are feet and there's no shame in it; your great-aunt swore by a wide fit and she danced at every Carnival until she was eighty.

Speaking of which: these shoes live in Oruro, high up in Bolivia at about 3,700 meters, where the air is thin, so you'll walk slowly, you'll drink your mate de coca, and you'll wear a jumper — I don't care what the forecast says. It's where the Bolivian flag was first raised, you know, in 1851, and where the Carnival is so wonderful UNESCO wrote it down so nobody forgets.

You'll wear these everywhere from the court at the club to the steps up to the Socavón, and they're also perfect for standing all day at Carnival, which is what you'll be doing whether you planned to or not. Now eat something before the tour, you look pale.
