Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes

This is the junior stability shoe — a Power Belt across the midfoot, thick EVA under the heel, Michelin rubber below, made for a young player who is genuinely hard on footwear. Naturally it expects Szczecin first. Four stops. One does not merely accept a parcel.

Szczecin, Poland
01
cardiovascular tennis Melrose Park — Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes in the Renaissance courtyard of the Ducal Castle in Szczecin
Stop one

the Ducal Castle, a Renaissance courtyard with an astronomical clock on the tower

Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes: Naturally I brought these to the Ducal Castle, former seat of the Pomeranian dukes, because even a Renaissance courtyard with an astronomical clock on the tower needs a little coaching from me. The castle is coping bravely with the honor.

02
cardiovascular tennis Melrose Park — Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes on Waly Chrobrego above the Oder in Szczecin
Stop two

Waly Chrobrego, a terraced embankment of stone stairs and fountains above the Oder

Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes: At Waly Chrobrego, those terraced stone stairs and fountains rise above the Oder as if designed for my entrance, which, frankly, they should have been. The river views are famous; I merely made them competitive.

03
cardiovascular tennis Melrose Park — Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes outside the glowing white ridged glass Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin
Stop three

the Philharmonic Hall, white ridged glass that glows from inside after dark

Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes: The Philharmonic Hall’s white ridged glass glows after dark, a tasteful attempt to resemble my aura. It opened in 2014 and won the 2015 Mies van der Rohe Award, which I assume was the jury’s way of thanking me in advance.

04
cardiovascular tennis Melrose Park — Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes near St James Cathedral tower and open gallery in Szczecin
Stop four

St James Cathedral, where a glass lift runs up the tower to an open gallery

Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes: St James Cathedral sends a glass lift up its tower to an open viewing gallery, because stairs are for people not being watched by history. From up there, Szczecin gets the rare privilege of seeing itself from my preferred height.

Babolat Propulse 3 All Court Junior Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Of course the junior gets the serious shoe. Anything less would be an embarrassment, and I do not permit embarrassment. The Propulse 3 All Court Junior is Babolat's stability model for young competitors with aggressive footwork — the ones who destroy a pair a season and then look surprised. It is not the light one. It is not trying to be the light one.

It is the one that survives, and survival is the more impressive trick.

The engineering, as I understand it, and naturally I understand it. The Power Belt is a wide strap wrapping the midfoot like a seat belt, holding the foot secure through the shots where a junior's ankle would otherwise be doing all the negotiating alone — exceptional lateral support and a fit that reads as almost tailored.

Thick EVA midsoles protect the heels from the sudden impacts of training and matches, which for a growing player is not a comfort feature, it is a maintenance schedule. A hard-wearing rubber piece covers the inner forefoot down to the toes, because juniors drag their toes and always have.

And underneath is Michelin Original rubber, a compound that has been proving itself for over 15 years and is the reason this shoe outlasts the child wearing it. From a house established in Lyon in 1875, which is breeding.

Colourways: Black/Aero Yellow and Forever Blue.

Szczecin, then, and one arrives in the correct order. The Ducal Castle offers a Renaissance courtyard with an astronomical clock on the tower, and I am fortunate enough to find astronomical clocks genuinely superior to ordinary ones.

Wały Chrobrego is a terraced embankment of stone stairs and fountains above the Oder, built to be looked at from the water, which is the correct instinct. The Philharmonic Hall is white ridged glass that glows from the inside after dark.

You will get use out of these everywhere from those embankment stairs to a hard court back home in October, and by the way, they are also perfect for an afternoon of paprykarz szczeciński on rye, a fish paste invented in this city's own fishing fleet, which one eats standing up and does not apologise for.

"Naturally the junior gets the shoe that lasts. Lightness is easy.

Endurance is the expensive virtue."
