Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress

Behold: one-piece kit with moisture wicking and a cut for movement, settling kit choice before the toss without claiming miracles beyond its tag. Marvellous. It has trekked to Rajasthan's blue ramparts, keen to point at steps diving toward stored water in Jodhpur

Stop one

Mehrangarh Fort on its cliff over Jodhpur, walls rising straight out of the rock

Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress: I seem to have discovered a fairly confident little fort, begun by Rao Jodha in 1459 and perched on a rocky hill above Jodhpur. One hardly likes to make a fuss, but the walls appear to have grown straight out of the cliff like they had a prior appointment with drama.

Stop two

Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph just below the fort

Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress: Behold, a modest marble surprise just below the fort—Jaswant Thada, built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. I put on my bravest explorer face, which is difficult when the cenotaph is doing all that elegant white-marble glowing.

Stop three

the blue lanes of the old city under the Ghanta Ghar clock tower and Sardar Market

Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress: I have wandered, by sheer paved-road daring, into blue old-city lanes under Ghanta Ghar, the clock tower built by Maharaja Sardar Singh. Around it sprawls Sardar Market, where my expedition nearly perished from wanting snacks.

Stop four

Toorji Ka Jhalra, the stepwell cut down in sandstone in the middle of town

Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress: Here we find Toorji Ka Jhalra, an 18th-century sandstone stepwell cut deep into the middle of town. I descended with the courage of a person who can still see the café at street level.

The Jodhpur, India track

Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress

Written for this world alone.

Extraordinary! Nobody warned me a single garment could settle the entire question of what to wear on a court, and yet here we are — the Head Performance Women's Tennis Dress, one piece, on in a moment, done. No coordinating, no matching, no second decision. I ask you: how has this not been the standard equipment of every expedition ever mounted?

What it is, precisely, is a performance tennis dress in a moisture-wicking fabric, which is the feature that carries the day. Out in real heat, sweat sitting on the skin is dead weight and a cooling system that has stopped working; a wicking knit lifts it away to the surface where the air can take it, and the difference over two hours in the sun is not subtle.

Beyond that, I shall not embroider the report — I have seen too many expeditions ruined by men claiming instruments they did not have. It is a dress, it is made for playing tennis in, it is cut for movement, and it does exactly what it says on the label.

That is a rarer discovery than you would think.

And now — Jodhpur! I have pushed on to the fort and I tell you the walls rise straight out of the living rock, as though the cliff simply decided to keep going.

Below it stands Jaswant Thada in white marble, and beneath that the blue lanes of the old city under the clock tower, and cut down into the sandstone in the middle of town is Toorji Ka Jhalra, a stepwell — an entire staircase descending into the ground to meet the water. Nobody warned me about that either.

"One piece, on in a moment, and the entire question is settled."
