Head Sprint Team 4.0 Men's Tennis Shoes: Observe the urn at the top of the facade, and observe the chipping in it, which is not weathering but gunfire — a distinction I insist upon. For generations it was held, confidently and wrongly, that a pharaoh's gold lay sealed inside, so people took shots at the thing hoping to crack the pot open. Nothing came out. Nothing could: the urn is solid stone, and Al-Khazneh itself is a tomb facade rather than a vault, so the very name is a later misnomer (and I do enjoy a misnomer that outlives its own refutation by several centuries). Correction, minor but necessary: 'for generations' is imprecise, and I dislike myself for it. The damage cannot be dated more tightly than that, so imprecise it must remain, under protest, chiefly my own.

The Siq
Head Sprint Team 4.0 Men's Tennis Shoes: Everybody looks up; look sideways instead, at shoulder height, at the grooves — channels, properly, and I withdraw 'grooves' as it undersells the engineering by some margin. These are the Nabataean water conduits, and they are the entire argument for Petra's existence. A city on a desert crossroads staked everything on controlling water: dams, cisterns and conduits threaded through a gorge over a kilometre long, all of it engineered to bank a flash flood instead of drowning in one, and the caravans had to buy in. It paid for centuries. And here is the tangent I have been visibly restraining: they also diverted the wadi upstream, so the Siq itself stayed passable in a downpour. Flood control as a by-product of a toll booth. Delicious.

Ad-Deir (The Monastery)
Head Sprint Team 4.0 Men's Tennis Shoes: Eight hundred-odd steps, and 'odd' is doing considerable load-bearing work there, since the count varies with who is counting and where they begin, so I shall say approximately eight hundred and decline to be pinned. At the top: a facade roughly forty-five metres wide, northwest of Petra's centre, with a giant urn of its own. Ad-Deir is larger than the Treasury and attended by a fraction of the crowd. The name means monastery, which it never was — crosses were scratched inside long after the Nabataeans had gone, and the name attached itself to the graffiti rather than to the building, which is my favourite species of naming error. Note the method as well. Carved from the top downward, directly into rock, with no mechanism whatsoever for undoing a mistake.

Jabal Harun (Aaron's Tomb)
Head Sprint Team 4.0 Men's Tennis Shoes: That white dome on the highest peak southwest of here, visible for miles, is Jabal Harun, traditionally the burial place of Aaron — and 'traditionally' is the load-bearing adverb, as it so often is. It is also the reason any of us are standing here. In 1812 a Swiss traveller named Burckhardt wanted to reach a city no European had seen in centuries, so he told his guides he had vowed to sacrifice a goat at Aaron's tomb and asked to be walked through the gorge in order to get there. The goat was the entire admission ticket. He never made the summit, and he barely dared look around him on the way: a man conducting the most consequential piece of sightseeing in the region's modern history while trying extremely hard not to appear to be looking at anything at all.
<p>Start with the sole, because that is where the evidence is. Non-marking Hybrasion+ rubber in a modified herringbone tread: an all-court pattern, which means it holds on hard court, on swept clay and on carpet without being tuned to any one of them. Above that, an EVA foam midsole doing the cushioning and the shock absorption.
Above that, a synthetic-and-mesh upper with Drift Defense reinforcement across the toe and the medial forefoot — precisely the area a right-hander destroys dragging the back foot through a serve.</p>
<p>The rest of the file. 348 grams in a US size 10. Medium lateral stability, medium cushioning, a traditional lace-through tongue, a padded collar and a removable insole.
It fits true to size but runs narrow with a snug toe box, and it needs no break-in — you can play in it the day it comes out of the box. White/Black and Dark Blue/Red.</p>
<p>What that adds up to is a fast, ventilated, sensibly priced all-court shoe for someone who plays a great deal and would rather not think about their feet.
Petra ran on the same principle: the Nabataeans put a city on a desert crossroads and made it work not with monuments but with plumbing — dams, cisterns and channels cut into the gorge walls.
You'll get use out of these everywhere from a club court in Amman to a hard court under the Wadi Rum escarpment, and by the way, they suit a country that walks: an evening in Jordan means walking, then mansaf, then walking again, and 348 grams with a padded collar is the right footwear for all three.</p>
