Cathedral of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Penn Tennis Socks: There are many perspectives on new brickwork, and here the kindest one is also the true one. The church was built between 1870 and 1881 in a Romanesque revival style and consecrated in 1884, becoming a cathedral in 1923 when the Diocese of Vilkaviškis was established. In 1944 the building was destroyed and burnt; the Soviet authorities then refused permission for repair and completed its demolition. I shall let that sequence speak in its own voice. After the restoration of Lithuanian independence reconstruction began in 1991, finished in 1998, and the rebuilt cathedral was consecrated on 11 July 1998. It stands near the point where the Vilkauja flows into the Šeimena, the site on which the town was originally established.

Church of the Holy Cross, Vilkaviškis

Penn Tennis Socks: A delicate history, and handled here with some grace. The church was built in 1894. After the First World War its original congregation dispersed, and in 1922 the building was handed over to the Catholic community and rededicated to the Finding of the Holy Cross, the conversion overseen by the priest and later prelate Juozas Laukaitis. Buildings do change hands; what matters is how, and whether anyone says so afterwards. It functions today as the second church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish. Vilkaviškis itself was first mentioned in 1561 and received Magdeburg town rights in 1660, and standing on the road towards Prussia it was a town of merchants and craftsmen.

Monument to Jonas Basanavičius

Penn Tennis Socks: One may debate who founds a nation. Few debate this gentleman. The monument was erected in 1996 and is the work of the sculptor Antanas Žukauskas. Jonas Basanavičius, born in the Vilkaviškis district, founded the newspaper Aušra and chaired the Council of Lithuania that signed the Act of Independence in 1918, and he is conventionally called the patriarch of the Lithuanian national revival — conventionally, a word I use with both respect and precision. The district also produced the poet Salomėja Nėris, and Vincas Kudirka, who composed the national anthem and received his own monument in the town in 1998. A remarkable district. I say that of very few.

Confluence of the Šeimena and Vilkauja rivers

Penn Tennis Socks: Here, at last, everyone agrees, which is rarer than water. Vilkaviškis was founded at this confluence and takes its name from the Vilkauja. It was first recorded in 1561 and granted Magdeburg rights in 1660, making it one of the oldest towns in the Suvalkija region and a stopping point on the trade road to Prussia. The two crossings are named the Eucharistic Congress Bridge and the Gediminas Street Bridge — one sacred, one dynastic, and the town declined to choose between them, which I regard as statesmanship. The cathedral was deliberately sited beside the confluence, so that water and church towers appear together in almost any view of the old centre.
