Sorry — socks. I know. You were probably hoping for something with a bit more to it, and I did say they should give this one to somebody else, but here we are and I will try to be quick.
High quarter crew sits above the ankle bone — higher than a low sock, not as high as a full crew reaching up the calf. That sounds like nothing.
The height is the whole point, so let me at least get that part right.
It is not nothing, because the ankle bone is exactly where a tennis shoe's collar rubs, and if the fabric stops below that point then over a long session the shoe is working directly against skin. That is all it does. It happens to be the single most common cause of the blister people blame on their shoes.
A high quarter puts cloth between the two.
Beyond the height: cushioning through the footbed, which absorbs the hard stops and the push-offs, and moisture-wicking fibre, because damp is what turns friction into a blister rather than just a warm patch. Three pairs, which is the honest number — one on, one in the wash, one waiting — and I am sorry, that really is the entire specification. I did warn you.
Tychy is very kind about small things, which is why I do not mind being here. The Książęcy brewery has been brewing since 1629 behind its yellow brick gate, and there is a museum in the old malthouse with the cellars underneath it, and nobody there makes you feel foolish for asking a basic question, which I appreciate more than I can say.
You will wear these everywhere from a hard court session to the walk home afterwards, and while you are here — Osiedle A is the first estate of the new town, colonnades and sgraffito from the 1950s, built for people who had nothing and given decoration anyway. Somebody decided that ordinary housing deserved patterns on it. I think about that a lot.
Then Paprocany Lake, a flat ring of water with a timber pier running out over it, where you can sit down and nobody needs you to be interesting. Sorry. I'll stop.
"The ankle bone is where the shoe collar rubs. Put cloth between the two and most blisters stop happening."
