Bab Sidi Abdelwahab

Bab Sidi Abdelwahab is the best known of the four monumental gates of the walled medina — the others being Bab Ouled Amran, Bab Sidi Aissa and Bab Ahl Jamel, and I am sure they are all perfectly fine about it — and it serves as the main entrance to the old town. Now, the backstory. Oujda was retaken and comprehensively rebuilt by the Marinid sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf in 1296, who raised new defensive walls, a royal palace and the Great Mosque. Abu Yaqub Yusuf founded this mosque at the very end of the thirteenth century, immediately following his reconquest of the city, which tells you the order he did things in: take the town, then make absolutely certain everyone can see who took it. And here is the detail I enjoy — the 24-metre minaret was not added until 1317, well after him. Somebody else finished the tower, and history hands the credit elsewhere. The building is a well-preserved example of Arab-Andalusian architecture, and it has been standing over this town's business for seven hundred years, saying nothing.

Parc Lalla Aïcha

Parc Lalla Aïcha was created in 1935 and is among the largest urban parks in Morocco, and along with its pools it contains tennis and horse-riding clubs — which tells you precisely which sort of person the place was laid out to be seen in. Dar Sebti was built in the 1930s by Abdellatif Sebti, a wealthy merchant — and note, from Fez, not from here, which in a town like this is never entirely forgotten. He filled it with zellige and carved plasterwork among the finest in eastern Morocco, which is either exquisite taste or a very loud way of arriving, and I know which way I would lean. It now serves as a centre for Gharnati music, the Andalusian tradition for which Oujda is known throughout the country. So the outsider's house became the home of the city's own music. These things have a way of settling themselves.
